Although I manage restaurants I used to work in tech support supporting a bunch of desktop and network clients and I also did hardware repair and new setups as well as refurbishing older computers. This was an in-house deal so most of the serious infractions we would find would just be software that wasn’t permitted to be installed. You know, shit like AOL. I would go through and delete all of the crap and clear out everything else. Luckily I never found anything as serious as what was found on Daniel Saldana-Jacinto’s computer.

18-year-old Saldana-Jacinto took his computer into a repair store in Reno, Nevada back in February to have it fixed. One of the employees found suspected child pornography on the hard drive and immediately called the police. Investigators found several child porn videos saved on the hard drive and arrested Daniel, charging him with ten counts of Possession of Child Pornography.

I guess everyone has to get their rocks off in different ways. Mine involve midgets and bulls (no animals were hurt in the writing of this story) but Leland Dement of Reno, Nevada apparently enjoys calling 911 to make threats.

The 60-year-old man was arrested Saturday after he called 911 more than 20 times the same morning. The man allegedly made threats against Our Lady of the Snows School including bomb threats. Bomb sniffing dogs were sent to the school and didn’t find anything but the school was still closed today and Dement, who is currently lodged in the Washoe County Jail on $28,000 bond, was charged with Unlawful Use of the 911 System and Making a Bomb Threat.

Of course since none of the above crimes really fit any type of modus operandi for me to actually post this story here so you may be wondering exactly why Leland is showing his wonderful mug shot on the front page…It’s BECAUSE of his mug shot that he’s here. I just couldn’t resist.

42-year-old Sandi Townsend and her three children have been arrested by Reno police after the group went into a South Reno Walmart with plans to steal several items.

The mother and her 14-year-old son and two 15-year-old girls went to Walmart with empty shopping bags and loaded them up while one of the kids acted as a lookout. All four of them were arrested after they left the store.

Townsend has been charged with Burglary, Conspiracy, Petit Larceny and Contributing to the Delinquency of Minors. There’s no law against stupidity or ugliness or she would have been charged with both of those as well.

    jamesbiela

The case against James Biela, the man who raped and murdered Brianna Denison is ongoing. While he hasn’t been to trial yet both sides are still filing motions, particularly the defense for Biela. New, really creepy heretofore unmentioned information has been released to the media.

Early on in the search for Brianna and her murderer who brutally raped and murdered her and then dumped her in a field, Biela was apparently monitoring stories on the Internet. A search of three computers in Biela’s home turned up thousands of searches after her disappearance of key terms such as “briana denison”, “abduction”, “choke”, “strangle”, “fetish” and “thongs” (remember the pink panther thongs?). The defense has filed a motion to keep this information out of the trial.

It’s sort of creepy. I started writing about Brianna’s disappearance from day one and stayed pretty high in the search listings until I moved my site here and if he was searching her name there is no way he could have missed my posts on Brianna Dennison. The dates are wrong now and they are out of order because something screwed up when I imported them here but if you do a search for Briana Denison on the site you’ll find the posts I wrote back in 2007 and 2008 on the case.

Kristopher Posada was an infant who lived a very short life. Seven weeks to be exact, seven painful abusive weeks that he spent on this earth before he succumbed to death on February 13th at the hands of the one person in the world he should have been able to count on to protect him; his mother, 30-year-old Josela Posada.

A friend of Posada’s called 911 around 5am on February 13th after she had called her friend (Posada cannot speak English) to say that he daughter was cold and not breathing. She claimed to have put the baby to bed the night before and was shocked to what she woke to. Officers were summoned to the house and attempted to question Posada, a suspected illegal alien from El Salvador. All that they got out of Posada was that she tried to pin the brutal beating death on her teenage babysitter, who has been cleared of the crime since.

After a week they determined that Kristopher had died of “non-accidental, violent trauma” that was inflicted on him. The thing is, most of the deaths of babies that are through abuse seem to be the result of a one-time deal. Someone loses their temper and in a rage they baby is hurt, or worse. To actively beat a baby to death over seven weeks would take a monster.

Law enforcement has declined to really talk about his injuries much but they are saying that he died of multiple injuries. It has been released that the coroner has ruled that the cause of death is most likely shaken baby syndrome. Police have said that child also had burns over his body.

Josela Posada was arrested earlier in the week and charged with Murder and Child Abuse Causing Substantial Bodily Harm. She is currently lodged in the Washoe County Jail with no bond. He other child, a 15-month-old girl by a different father, has been removed and put in a foster home. ICE has also put a hold on Posada due to the fact that she is an illegal.

James Biela, the man who has been accused of raping and murdering Brianna Denison back in January of 2008 as well as sexually asaulting two other women in Reno, Nevada, has a new attorney. His trial is scheduled for February 2010 and now that Washoe County Chief Deputy Public Defender has taken over as his attorney since his last one left for private practice I don’t know if they will have to reschedule the trial date or not.

Hopefully the change won’t give the defense an excuse to prolong the trial any more than they have to.

The Reno Police Department has a suspect in the murder of Brianna Denison in custody. He has not been charged yet and his name hasn’t been released. Normally they can hold a suspect up to 48 hours without charging him with anything.
Law enforcement has taken a DNA sample after his arrest Tuesday night, which takes around 12 hours to complete. They are expecting the results later this morning and have a press conference scheduled for 10am this morning.
Police believe that the suspect is linked to two other sexual assault cases near the University of Nevada as well.
By the time they get the results back in I will be at work and won’t be able to update this post until this evening.

Earlier in the year I wrote extensively about Brianna Denison’s murder and the search for her killer. He is still at large and law enforcement as well as Brianna’s family are still trying to bring her justice.

I used to get a feed from the Journal-Gazette but apparently it’s not working for me anymore because I just came across this article about the Denison Blue-Ribbon Campaign.

On Labor Day, tying a blue ribbon around your tree, mailbox or vehicle antenna in memory of Brianna Denison will remind the community of the importance of personal safety.

That’s the hope of Denison’s family and the board members of the Bring Bri Justice Foundation, aimed at making sure all women and children are safe in Nevada. Denison’s killer, who authorities say was a serial sexual predator targeting college neighborhoods, has yet to be caught.

On Monday, the group is launching “Tie a Ribbon for Bri Day” to coincide with school returning to session. Blue ribbons will be available at Reno and Sparks area Starbucks and Scolari’s locations.

Community members are encouraged to tie more ribbons, or replace those that have gotten tattered.

Blue was Brianna’s favorite color. The blue ribbons became a connecting symbol for the community who first searched for her when she was missing, and then demanded justice upon her death.

The foundation had a place flying on Labor Day with a banner that directed people to the foundation’s web site which is the official site dedicated to Brianna Denison.

The vision statement for the Bring Bri Justice Foundation includes:

    • Bring Brianna Denison’s murderer to justice.
    • Promote legislative and legal efforts to increase consequences preventing violent crimes.
    • Promote public awareness assuring the safety of all women and children in Nevada

Go check out the website if you have time and donate as well.

Police are reporting that a second pair of panties found with Brianna Denison’s body had DNA belonging to her, the man who killed her and a woman who lived at the house where Denison was abducted.

This was news because if you remember, originally they were saying that there was ONE pair of panties found near the body. Reno police have identified the second pair as belonging to one of the students that lived in the house Briana was abducted from on January 20th.

Police are reporting that they didn’t immediately release the details about the second pair of panties because more investigation was needed and that it’s pretty typical for investigators to not release information right away.

The City of Reno and America’s Most Wanted teamed up and have released a video on the Reno web site with pertinant facts in the investigation.

If for some reason the video doesn’t show up properly you can also try to view it at the City of Reno Briana Denison Investigation web page.

I finally arrived home around ten last night, five hours late, but more on that later. Because of the storms that passed through Georgia my cable TV and Internet was out for about fourteen hours which meant I couldn’t post at all. That was probably a blessing in disguise because knowing me I would have been up until three a.m. making up for lost time…

Early Friday afternoon I received a link to this AP video that reported Briana Denison’s mother and uncle believed that the missing college student was still alive. At that point in time they had plans to process a backlog of 3,000 DNA samples in their search for her. It’s weird that this video was released at 4:13 p.m. which was about four hours AFTER the body was found. Of course at that time she may not have been identified but I find it hard to believe that her family had not been informed.

I was browsing some headlines and came across this entry over at the Crime Scene Blog where they are reporting that Briana Denison has been found. Actually they found her body on Friday while I was in the Bahamas and out of the news loop, which is why I haven’t written anything about it over the weekend. Stephen McCaskill has this to say about it:

On Friday the body of a young woman was found in a brush covered field near a business park in Reno, NV. Today an autopsy identified the body as that of 19-year-old Brianna Denison, who has been missing since January 19th, 2008. She had spent the night at a friend’s house and was discovered missing the morning of the 20th.

The autopsy also reported the cause of death as strangulation. Her body had been in the field, which was just 8 miles from the home where she was kidnapped, for more than a week.

Someone who works in the nearby busy industrial center noticed a body lying in the field on Friday and called the police to report it at 12:13 p.m. Reno police found the site six minutes later and cordoned off the area around the site, which is 2-3 acres.

The story is of course also being reported on KVTN Reno/Tahoe news and there are several videos over there. Mainly press conferences and a couple of interviews as well.

The Reno police are assuming that they are dealing with a serial rapist and have at least two cases, possibly three, that are linked with DNA. How weird. Not really weird, just that I finished reading Cross byt James Patterson, dealing with a serial rapist/murderer on the flight home last night. I have never read any of the Alex Cross books and it started out somewhat dry but I enjoyed it and now have a series to start reading (when I get the free time). I digress, back to the subject at hand…

There really isn’t anything other than a recap of the story at any of the news sites and I will pretty much repeat that here.

Briana was a student at Santa Barbara City College in California but was visiting Reno, where she is from, over winter break. She was last seen sleeping on a couch at a friend’s house just off the University of Nevada Reno campus on January 20th. From CNNs report on her body being found there is a partial description of the abductor based on descriptions from previous victims:

…police have described the suspect as a white male between ages 28 and 40 and at least 5 feet 6, with a long face and brown hair. He was believed to have no accent or regional dialect.

The killer’s familiarity with the city suggests he likely lives in Reno, Johns said, adding that he believes the “chances are very good” they will catch him.

“It could be tomorrow, next month, next year. We are going to find this suspect,” he told reporters.

The killer probably lives near the campus just north of the downtown casino district or on the city’s nearby northwest side, Johns said, and he may work closer to the city’s southeast side, where the body was found.

“Somewhere in our community there is a wife, a mom, a girlfriend, a sister who recognizes this suspect. Likely he looks like somebody you would least suspect, but that is the person who is responsible for this crime,” he said.

Publicity of the manhunt may cause the rapist to stop attacking, but “our absolute fear is he may re-offend,” Johns said.

Briana Denison’s mother issued a statement on Saturday thanking police and the community for their help in searching for her daughter. “On March 29, 1988, Bridgette and Jeffrey Denison were given the incredible gift of their daughter Brianna. On January 20, 2008, she became the daughter of our entire community,” Bridgette Denison also asked that every woman in the community “be diligent about their own safety”.

The Washoe County Coroner’s Office did an autopsy on Saturday, which is when they officially identified Briana, and they announced it at a news conference. According to Police she had been strangled. Her body had been in the field for at least a week and was concealed there by heavy snow. The full autopsy report won’t be available for a few weeks because they still have pending toxicology reports as well as other stuff. All of that crap you see on CSI and other shows are pretty much a lie as to how quickly this stuff gets done, including the fact that the CSI guys are the ones out there solving the crimes.

While the manhunt for the serial rapist continues, the community is mourning the loss of a young woman that some say was like family.

I haven’t been able to find any confirmation for it (yet) but one of the commenters over at Websleuths stated that during the press conference one of the reporters asked about cameras on surrounding buildings and it was stated that local businesses are volunteering their video that may help in the case. That pretty much sounds like standard operating procedure to me and not something that would generally be reported unless something was seen, which is why I don’t have a link for it.

Brianna’s body was found in South Reno at the intersection of Double R Boulevard and Sandhill Road and since Friday hundreds of people who have never met Brianna Denison have driven there to pay their respects and mourn the loss. The are is no surrounded with blue balloons, flowers, notes, candles and stuffed animals. Blue was apparently Brianna’s favorite color.

America’s Most Wanted also had an update on the case (same info as above) and apparently the crew is currently in Reno as well.

There is also a timeline (with no links) of key events in the Brianna Denison case over at Nevada Appeal.

CBS News has this video out this morning which discusses the fear that Reno residents are facing as a result of the serial rapist turned murderer.
