How do I get one of those nifty avatars to show up in my comments?

There are two ways you can go about that and both are pretty easy. One is to head on over to edit your profile here but you have to sign up for an account first. It’s easy and painless and you get to do pointless shit like send private messages. I will be adding more stuff eventually for registered users including adding back in the forums which you will have to be registered to use.

The other way, and one which you may prefer is to head on over to Gravatar.com and sign up there. It’s also simple and painless and quick. You just have to confirm your email address and upload your gravatar. Tens of thousands of web sites use Gravatars including this one and you only have to upload it once for it to show up at any of them you might frequent. It’s based on your email address so you have to remember to use the same one when you comment as you do when you sign up at their site.

Why doesn’t my comment show up?

If you have never posted a comment here, the first one always gets moderated until I approve it. This generally will take anywhere from five minutes to 12 hours, depending on if I am here or not. If I am on vacation or something it may be a few days. Comments are also automatically monitored for spam so if you post a lot of links or are coming from a domain known for spam it might get caught there as well.

Be patient and if your comment still hasn’t shown up after a few hours feel free to contact me using the links at the top of the page.

Update to the commenting system 3/9/10 – Over the last couple of months I have switched to using the Disqus commenting system that is in place on many web sites. It enables me to allow anonymous commenting in a central system and if you sign up at Disqus your login there is good at ANY site which uses it. The caveat to that is that if you want to use the IM features and private messaging here you still have to sign up for an account. It would be nice if signing up here would automatically add you to Disqus and I will request that but I don’t see it happening.

Also, if you have previous used Gravatar they work with Disqus as well so you don’t have to reupload your avatar or anything.

I signed up for an account and haven’t received my password.

A couple of things could be happening here. Either you entered your email address incorrectly, our confirmation email is getting caught in your spam filter, or it could just be taking a while.
