The University of Alabama campus in Huntsville is reportedly on lockdown after a shooting at the Shelby Center. Four people have reportedly been shot, two of them killed and the other two in critical condition.

Huntsville Police also apparently have a female suspect in custody, although another rumor has it that two people are in custody.

I will be posting more information on this as I come across it.

6:23pm – The Huntsville Times are now reporting that three of the victims are dead and the other is critically injured.

6:27pm – There is a rumor circulating, and I mean just a rumor that the shooter was a female biology teacher wearing a pink and black sweater who was denied tenure this morning. WAFF is also reporting that the shooter is a female member of the UA-Huntsville faculty and at least three of the victims are co-workers. They are also reporting that she was denied tenure during a biology faculty meeting and that she then pulled out a gun and started shooting.

The University as well as Huntsville Hospital are under lockdown.

6:56pm – It’s my understanding that the 2nd person in custody is the husband of the shooter. He has not been formally charged with anything.

7:04pm – I am hearing reports that the shooter is Dr. Amy Bishop, pictured below.

According to the faculty listing I linked to earlier Dr. Bishop teaches genetics at UAH. When you click on the link for Dr. Bishop the following page is displayed rather than her faculty profile.

There has been a shooting on campus.  The shooter has been apprehended.  The campus is closed tonight.  Everyone is encouraged to go home.  Classes are cancelled for tonight.  Any additional cancellations or changes will be announced as they become available.  There is a Command Center set up at Madison Hall Room 109.  Counselors are available in University Center Rooms 125, 126 and 127 for anyone who wishes to speak with a counselor.
It has been confirmed no students are involved.

Actually it looks like ALL the pages at UAH are now showing that message.

2/13/10 5:37am – Dr Amy Bishop has been charged with Capital Murder in the deaths of G. K. Podila, Maria Ragland Davis and Adriel Johnson. The wounded faculty members are Joseph Leahy, who is in critical condition, and Stephanie Monticello and Luis Rogelio Cruz-Vera who are both in stable condition.

Witnesses are reporting that this was a case of Bishop being denied tenure during a faculty meeting of the biology department. In this case, tenure is usually given to a senior professor to protect them from being fired without "just cause".

2/15/10 5:06pm – According to WHDH Amy Bishop shot and killed her younger brother in Braintree, MA 20 years ago. Judging by the reports it looks as if there was a cover-up and perhaps if it had been taken car of two decades ago the crazy bitch might not have killed three more people.
