Author and owner of Captain Obvious' Crime Site. I have been blogging in one form or another since the days of Fidonet and BBSes in the early nineties. Started blogging in it's current form around 10 years ago and got seriously interested in crime in 2005, about the time Natalee Holloway vanished. I've been hooked ever since.

First of all Gary is from the Bronx NY. Maybe the news should pay attention. Gary was also adopted and constantly abused by his mother Betty mentally and Physically. His adoptive parents Anthony Detoma and Betty Detoma were mired in a bitter divorce. Anthony wanted to get divorced but Betty refused to allow it threating with telling the I.R.S. about Anthony Srs tax issues. She finally told the IRS about the tax issues and he owed millions of dollars after intrest and penalties. Gary went into a deep depression knowing what his mother did to his father. So what happened is a horrible situation but look at the whole picture before commenting. !!!!

I have known Gary since I was fifteen years old, so lets get some “facts” straight. The divorce between Betty and Anthony Sr. occured over 25 years ago. The worst impact for Gary following the divorce was that he wasn’t quite as spoiled as usual. Gary and Betty continued living in his paternal grandmother’s home (after the divorce) until her death when Gary was into his 20′s. He then moved with Betty to another apt. in the Bronx. Was Betty “difficult” at times? definitely. Did she physically abuse him? No. If anything she constantly came to his defense when he was treated unfairly at work by both Anthony Sr. and Anthony Jr. As a child of extreme abuse it amazes me how easily people toss around the claim of “abuse”. Gary wasn’t beaten, starved, or deprived of any necessities of life. If anything he was a bit spoiled. Did Gary have “issues”? Definitely. But being short, adopted, and a child of divorce are NO excuse for the atrocities he commited. Again, he was raised to value life and take responsibility for his actions. As long as I knew Gary he was meek and cowardly, yet it didn’t prevent him from being incredibly selfish and insensitive at times. I am absolutely horrified and heartbroken at what has happened and despite what Gary has done I pity him. Right or wrong, there was a time when I loved him very much and can’t conceive of him doing this. The entire family is in my prayers and especially Melanie (whom I’ve never met) but I pray for courage and strength for her to continue being a wonderful Mother to her beautiful son Will. EVERYONE has lost in this situation and the ramifications of Gary’s actions will be far reaching and life long for every member of this family.

In the first place, if you had actually read the first article I wrote, which is linked to above, you might notice that I did point out he is from the Bronx. Obviously you didn’t bother to actually read what you were commenting on.

Second of all, you fucking moron, I don’t really give a flying rat’s ass about his family or depression. He murdered a child.

A lot of people have shitty parents. It doesn’t make them kill their own children.

i am sorry for what has happened but either way he killed a young child and tried to kill another, he should be punished and get the dealth penalty, he deserves that, who goes around killing young children they havent done nothing wrong to him then we should they be treated like that.

  • Mikegonnagetu

yes he still killed a kid, but he had alot of problems. 2 wrongs dont make a right, but he shouldnt get the death penalty. He has to live his whole life now knowing what he has done wrong, and thats the way his life is going to go!!
