39-year-old Darrell Smith was arrested in Moses Lake, Washington last Saturday for Kidnapping and Robbery. She was supposed to have his a bond hearing Monday but before he got to court he claimed to be sick and said he needed to go back to the jail.
A deputy started to take him back but Smith managed to duck his guard and ran away. Smith ran through the town of Ephrata and managed to steal a grain truck with the keys still in it. Darrell Smith drove about 20 miles back toward Moses Lake with cops in hot pursuit. Just as he reached Moses Lake he pulled off of the road still going at full speed, jumping the old grain truck 3 feet in the air.
Smith ditched the truck and ran toward the lake, jumping right in handcuffs and all. He didn’t make it very far dogpaddling while still shackled. About 15 yards out he started screaming like a little girl that he was drowning. The officers jumped in and pulled the man out of the lake. He’s now facing several more charges in addition to the original two.
According to one of the deputies,
He left the roadway at full speed. He turned that big old truck into a dune buggy. He made several jumps because of the berms out there on the hill. My estimate is that he was 3 or 3 1/2 feet in the air at times. It was just like Dukes of Hazzard, all four tires in the air. It was crazy.
