Author and owner of Captain Obvious' Crime Site. I have been blogging in one form or another since the days of Fidonet and BBSes in the early nineties. Started blogging in it's current form around 10 years ago and got seriously interested in crime in 2005, about the time Natalee Holloway vanished. I've been hooked ever since.

I’m sorry for your loss.  Also, thank you for not defending him and making this about him and his reasoning for what he has put your family through.  Your focus on your aunt shows that you are a real class act.

      RIP JoAnn.

She’s right, Justin had a mental illness. In fact I worked with Justin. He was one of my former clients in a private service that I used to work for. He has never been violent. I am shocked that this has happen, but my prayers go out to the family.

I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to the Wilburn families. Mrs. Wilburn taught two of my children and I was quite saddened to hear of her demise.  I am a mother and I know that the reason this story is not going to get a great deal of coverage is because this is not about a son murdering his mother, this is a story about a Iraqi soldier not getting the assistance that he desperately needed due to a mental illness that was had not manifested itself until this soldier went into the military.  My heart goes out to this family and the countless others that will be ravaged by rampant mental illness and lack of care that are plaguing our soldiers.  We mothers raise our children to have morals and good character and they are sent off to do what we believe is in the best interest of our nation, but the reality is  that any human being that has to endure the ugly realities of war, are deeply scarred for it is not something that is ever experienced in a daily civilized society.  My heart goes out for this man and his mother, who I know he loved dearly.  A son didn’t kill a mother, a soldier that was not giving the proper care could not cope and lashed out on an innocent civilian.

Sounds like a good excuse for a defense anyway.

I agree. Maybe then he could get the treatment that should have been provided when he exited the service.

I am Curtis Wilburn. I am a son and brother. I have lost so much during this. I don’t know who has slandered my brother but he has never served in the military. He never liked the idea of being in the military. Our father served in the Army and I serve in the military as well. Yes he has a mental illness, but he has NEVER been violent. I thank all those that have sent prayers up for my families and I ask that you continue to pray not just for all of us and just but each and every person that my mother has touched and loved.

I have known the Wilburn family for many years, I knew and coached Justin when he between the ages of 8-13. I am very saddened by this tragedy and my heart and prayers go out to all the Wilburn family. Joann was a lovely, warm and compassionate women. I have nothing but fond memories of Justin. For Curtis, time will heal.

Although saddened by this, we do have a small victory that Justin was found not guilty by reason of insanity.  Justin will go to a State Mental Health facility and will get the much help needed.  I pray one day that light be shed on people that suffer from mental illness. As time goes on there is less help and increase of danger to the people caring for the persons vexed with mental illness.  We love both Mrs. wilburn and justin and do pray that this family will began to heal
