Leah Gayle Shipman, a 39-year-old teacher from Brunswick County Academy in Wilmington, North Carolina, has been arrested and charged with Statutory Rape, Indecent Liberties With a Child and Sexual Acts by a Teacher.
The alleged incidents happened starting in April of 2009 when her victim was 15-years-old.
Shipman has been teaching in Brunswick County since 2002 and has been suspended pending the investigation. The school system has been working with the Brunswick County Sheriff and made the sheriff’s department aware of the allegations as soon as they found out about it.
Shipman is currently lodged in the Brunswick County Jail on $100,000 bond.
