24-year-old Edward Lee Spencer is a serious douchebag with a lot of mental problems. Back in 1999 he was convicted of molesting four boys when he was 13-years-old. In 2007 he ended up going back to jail after his probation officer found child pornography on his computer.
He spent the next year in jail and was released in 2008. When he got out he was listed as a Sexually Dangerous Predator based on his activities.
You would think that after having been jailed again in 2007 he would try to keep a low profile but apparently he just couldn’t do it. Spencer volunteered as a camp counselor at the Southern Christian Leadership Council’s Summer Slam 2009.
Luckily for the children attending one of the camper’s mothers saw Spencer’s picture on a sex offender web site and called police. He was arrested and charged with Predator Volunteering at a Prohibited Location. As a matter of fact he has the dubious distinction of being the first sex offender in Georgia to be charged and convicted on the offense.
Edward Spencer has been convicted and sentenced to 30 years in prison with 15 to serve. His probation on the prior offense has also been revoked. I don’t know how much of that sentence he’ll have to serve before the other one starts or if they are running concurrently.
One thing that seriously concerns me is that the SCLC should be doing some sort of background checks on it’s volunteers and employees. The lack of concern among it’s so-called leaders would certainly make me keep my children from ever attending any type of function they sponsor.
